SEO Secrets Revealed, Part II of a True Story

Two weeks ago I told you about a man who runs several web sites, one of which gets some really amazing search engine results rankings.

I interviewed Mo, a lawyer who works for the US Army, a few weeks ago.  An abbreviated version of the audio interview is posted in our audio blog folder.  The full unabridged version of the interview is available on the EMX web site for the community members.

For this blog post I want to illustrate the key points that we covered in the interview.  This is a real life situation and these key points are illustrated clearly by Mo's story.  Listen to the interview for the full context.

  • Try to get your users to contribute content to your site.
  • If you have a user-contributed site, you can fix grammar, and even tweak content titles to achieve keyword optimization
  • Do your keyword research, find keywords with high demand and relatively low supply
  • Make sure you create good content, use topics you're interested in to stay motivated and relevant.  Your core topic needs to be something personally interesting to you and that you have some knowledge about.
  • Your keywords should be used in your content as much as possible.
  • Make efficient use of your time. This is a labor of love.  It can take a lot of your time without a lot of profit, at least in the beginning.  For Mo, this is fun.  He does it instead of playing farmville or watching YouTube videos, or other entertainment.
  • Google wants good search results for their users, that's the bottom line.  Don't play games and try to trick the search engines.  It doesn't work.
  • Multi media is important.  Use video, audio, photos, whenever you can.
  • Find niches that compliment your web site.
  • Use forums, facebook, and twitter.  Leverage automatic feeds for social media.

So there you have it - the full list of Mo's secrets.  If you want to hear the details about what Mo did, how long it took, how he measured results and the different tactics he tried, listen to the interview.  This is e-marketing for small business at it's best!
